Welcome to South
Carolina, the home of "Smiling Faces and Beautiful Places." During the
colonial period and into the first decade of American independence, wealth,
tradition and access to the sea held the state's cultural and political heart
in Charleston. But by the Revolution, massive population movement had peopled
the midlands and the upstate with diverse communities. Scant representation in
the power structure, along with the distance to the seats of law and justice in
Charleston, left this backcountry much to its own devices - a condition that no
doubt pleased some of its citizens, but in time dismayed the majority.
